Why I think Steve Van Zandt is a good guy !
I have a special place in my heart for Steve van Zandt. Why? I don't remember the exact date but it was around 1981, Steve and his band performed in a small venue near Antwerp. Because my boyfriend and myself were Springsteen and E-street band fans, we wanted to go see the concert but couldn't really afford it. A friend of my boyfriend, who was visiting from the USA ,did have enough money so we decided to go with him and we'd just go and wait outside. He bought his ticket and went in. We sat on the lawn outside hoping to at least hear something ...and just to soak up the concert atmosphere. A security guy came up to us and asked what we were doing, we explained we meant no harm and asked if we could please stay. He told us we could if we stayed put in our spot. Our spot was somewhere near the side of the building , on the grass near the sidewalk. We really didn't know we were next to the path that lead to the artists entrance. A bus arrived, stopped in front of us ...and out came the band and Steve van Zandt. We didn't want to be rude or get in trouble so we thought we would get up and back off a little. But as we got up Steve approached us, assuming we were waiting for him and perhaps a signature. We explained we were just hoping to hear something and that we were there because our friend was inside and that we couldn't afford a ticket. He told us he hoped we managed to hear something out there..and to enjoy ourselves. We took our place again and were just thrilled we had spoken to him...it made up for not going in! A while later the concert started. Security guards were still walking around outside once in a while but they left us alone. There was a guard posted near the artist entrance. We did here a bit of sound but not much. Well into the first song the side door opened and a man was talking to the security guy. The security guy came to us and asked us to follow him. We did and the man at the door told us he had instructions from Steve van Zandt and asked us to follow him. He brought us behind and around the stage and there a security guard took over and brought us to the front row to a spot right in the middle. We were a bit speechless to say the least. We hadn't even hoped for anything except a spot outside.... now we were front row, middle !!! During the second song Steve looked down to where we were and winked at us ... we had a big smile of gratitude and a thumbs up as thank you! We soooo enjoyed that concert!!!! We spotted our friend about 10 rows back, he was not happy :) It was just one of those experiences in life that make a difference. a really nice difference ! Thank You Steve ! my lesson ? It never hurts to do something nice for someone. It could make a difference !
